Metal Shredder Maintenance Tips: Extend Lifespan and Reduce Failures

As high-load operating equipment, metal shredders are prone to problems such as blade wear and motor overheating if not properly maintained. This not only increases maintenance costs but also delays production. Mastering the following four maintenance tips can extend the equipment’s lifespan by more than 30%.

Blade Maintenance is Key. After each operation, clean the metal shavings remaining between the blades to prevent rust. Check the blade sharpness weekly; if the shredded material particles become significantly larger, grind or replace them promptly. When grinding, ensure the blade angle is consistent; for dual-shaft models, ensure the blade gap on both sides is the same, otherwise, uneven shredding will occur.

Don’t Neglect the Lubrication System. Bearings, gears, and other transmission components require regular lubrication. Lubricate every 200 hours for single-shaft shredders and every 150 hours for dual-shaft models. Use high-temperature resistant lithium-based grease to effectively reduce component wear. Also, check for blockages in the oil lines; if the lubricating oil is found to be black, replace it immediately and clean the oil lines. **Timely Motor Maintenance is Crucial.** Before operation, check that the motor wiring is secure to avoid loose connections that could overload the motor. During operation, monitor the motor temperature; if it exceeds 80℃, stop the machine to allow it to cool down and prevent coil burnout. Clean the dust off the motor’s heat sink monthly to ensure proper heat dissipation. During the rainy season, take precautions against moisture to prevent short circuits.

Regular Comprehensive Inspections are Essential. Conduct a comprehensive inspection of the equipment monthly, focusing on whether the bolts on the machine body are loose, whether the conveyor belt is misaligned, and whether the safety devices are in good working order. Address any problems promptly. For example, if the conveyor belt is misaligned, adjust the roller position; if bolts are loose, tighten them to the standard torque using a torque wrench.

Proper daily maintenance ensures the metal shredder operates at high efficiency, reduces downtime due to malfunctions, and lowers production costs for the company.
